40m APRS Trials

Recently on the OZAPRS mailing list there was the suggestion of setting up an APRS network on 40m (7MHz) this has been used successfully in New Zealand for some time and I have in the past attempted to initiate similar but with no takers! So what have I seen on 40m thus far? here’s a screen shot of my XASTIR viewing the South East of Australia… UPDATE: the gallery plug in was removed so images are no longer available

Me TV 0.8.0 Development Continues

Well another productive evening has been spent on development for the upcoming release of Me Tv 0.8.0 Although I’m having a small issue with the channel scan, I think my DVB-T USB Pinnacle 72e is just too slow!

UPDATE: the gallery plug in was removed so images are no longer available

Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope UNR (beta)

Have you ever just wanted to try something because your curiosity got the better of you?  Well it just happened to me! I was just browsing the latest news from ubuntu to discover that their “ubuntu netbook remix” had just been released for jaunty. In the past I was real keen to use the Alpha releases, beta & RC but when I started with intrepid I managed to break my puta! leaving me with a annoying situation of re-installing. So with that I’ve decided to hold off until releases become “stable releases” (mainly for my sanity!) Well I couldn’t resist the temptation with the UNR as I’ve been using Easy Peasy 1.0 since I purchased my Eee a month ago!  I have to admit I really like the new usplash & login theme (I tend to favour darker themes!)

So the install went well (only took about 45 minutes!) and then I was presented with the new working ubuntu netbook remix (jaunty) only to discover that the touchpad was very sluggish compared to Easy Peasy (intrepid) and tended to jump about the screen when you use the touchpad! so I made adjustments to the acceleration & sensitivity but this made no difference to the touchpad. So what to do? report it to the team on Launchpad!

https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix/+bug/349509

The next thing that caught my attention was the application to switch from the standard “netbook” interface to the “classic” desktop! this works great… until you reboot or log out of the current session! So again time to do the right thing and report my finding!

https://bugs.launchpad.net/desktop-switcher/+bug/349519

Although I still have a functional install I’m now deciding whether to roll back to EP 1.0 or wait it out for some of the issues to be fine tuned! (maybe I should have waited!)

Freeview (what a joke!)

This was to promised “new” revolution for television Australia wide! however, since this was first advertised (back in November 2008) very little is yet to appear here in Tasmania.  Although considered a “regional” status, Tasmania has lacked any descent television coverage of the major broadcasters so to miss out on Freeview ONE should not come as any surprise! as yet we still don’t have “ANY” freeview channels since the national advertising campaign went to air over five months ago!

To view the add that was advertised up to the end of January this year Freeview. The last “Media Update” to appear on this website is dated 24 November 2008! so what has happened? what is going to happen? when will this happen? are just some of the questions that are left unanswered!

As these adds imply that Freeview was to begin at the beginning of February (it did in the major populous areas) but there is an even greater expectation that has been left out in the cold. So was this just an attempt to make people either buy a DTV set-top box or DTV ready Television?

Easy Peasy 1.1 rc2 (work in progress)

I’ve just been working on some source for the upcoming release of Easy Peasy (Ubuntu for net-books) but unfortunately I’m unable to figure out just what is wrong! (sorry Jon!) but for anyone interested in this Remix of Ubuntu then you can see more at…

More random ramblings !!!

So what do you think of the current theme Im using for my Blog? So far I actully like it! I must admit I do miss some of the functionality of a 3 columb theme but so far so good! (well I think so) Anyway a project that I’m working on at the moment is to get a program (that I have mentioned on this Blog before!) Me Tv updated for the up comming release of Ubuntu Januty Jackalope (9.04) I’m having some issuse with build dependencies. I hope I can work through this and get it to compile correctly! Time for bed…

A change !!! or just trying a new theme…

I’ve decided to give this theme a try, as it blends better with my home page! Although I normally use a 3 column theme (this is only 2) I’m reduced in the clutter I like to have! so for now it’s simple and shouldn’t take long to load!
