Canonical and transparency with Ubuntu community

There has been much debate on planet ubuntu about the new default themes and the more controversial decision to the placement of the window buttons on the top left hand side (Mac style) as opposed to what some class as the default on the top right hand side (Windows style) What I find more of a concern to to larger community is that major changes never get discussed publicly but just "happen" then those that aren't adjusted to change then feel that they haven't had a fair chance to contribute to the overall project. I earlier posted about "ubuntu is happy to call itself open source or is it" there is a growing divide between the commercial interest of Canonical and what they (Canonical) call the ubuntu community, the very people that both support and contribute there time and expertise to better the overall project.

As users of ubuntu, should we be better informed about the major changes, weather they be trivial or actual so that as a community we have a say as currently we are simply sheep following the Canonical shepherd… are we better than this?

An end in sight?

Well I've yet to hear the official word, but I believe that the Cambridge IMT will wind up tomorrow evening. If this is to be the case, then this will end a fortnight of work as a volunteer radio operator!

So as you can see from the image above, I was deep in concentration! (OK this is a pose) but receiving and send messages was the main roll and this also included recording weather reports from the field. I've not done an exact count of hours I've spent, but lets say I'm starting to feel the results of long hours … on the plus side during this time my insomnia has not been as bad! 😀

Now as I haven't posted a change log before some of its content is now obsolete/substituted for new commands or functionality. There has also been some confusion when loading the Alpha Code, and then connecting a GPS and expecting the TinyTrak4 to just work! well you do need to configure it first! and just recently Byon has released a simple UI to achieve this. I must add, the the TinyTrak4 has two serial inputs and the default settings for those are that…

Serial Port 1: Speed: 19200 Parity: none Bits: 8 Stopbits: 1

Serial Port 2: Speed: 4800 Parity: none Bits: 8 Stopbits: 1

You need to make a custom Y cable (or purchase one from Byon) to access the second serial port as the DB-9 is wired to a non-standard meaning that if you attempt to use off the self cables the second serial port is in assessable! So once you have the Y-cable sorted then you have access to both serial ports.

I've successfully got my TinyTrak4D monitoring the ISS for APRS packets, and each morning there is something different displayed on the LCD screen!

I'm also making slow progress on the re-build of the TinyTrak4 wiki

Leukaemia Foundation Light the Night Hobart

Well with the weather Hobart has been blessed with for the last 24 hours the original plans for this occasion had to be changed due to the heavy rain !!! However a large turn out packed the Hobart City Hall for the first Leukaemia Foundation Light the Night. It was announced that Tasmania had raised $68000 $70000 + with still more donations being given during the event.

This is the path taken on the night!

The red is the modified path taken! Starting in Market Place, it was interesting to see that the line of balloons stretched about 1.5 Km in length so that nearly the whole circuit was alight for the duration. I'm not sure on the total amount of people in attendance, but City Hall was a pretty crowded place! so in all the night was a good one!

LTN_emailsignature-Hobart

I've reached 2 1/2 years remission from Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma) and I too was supported by the Leukaemia foundation during my treatment…

Now for the weather enthusiast's, here are the two images from the BOM showing just what is upon us!

SMS from Mgs from Vic Police

Strange! I'm about 1200 Kms from the recent events in Victoria, but I have received the following today via an SMS !!!

Msg from Vic Police:

Extreme weather in Vic expected Mon night & Tues. High wind & fire risk. Listen to local ABC Radio for emergency updates. Do not reply to this

2 Mar. 2009 14:33

From:61437985455

I understand the need to keep the public informed of "Local" events or requirements but this to me appears to be a knee jerk reaction from the Victorian Police! I'm sure that they (Vic Police) are just trying to cover their ass so that it can't be said that they didn't try to do anything!
